‘Baginen. Euskal Herriko Historia Emakumeen Bitzartez’ was chosen by the Bookseller’s Association of Navarre as the Best Book in Basque language 2020. A translation in Castilian has been published this year by the same publishing company, Txalaparta. As well as filling an important gap by telling the stories of around fifty women who had hitherto enjoyed little or no visibility, the book provides an insight into Basque history from a different perspective, thus becoming even more appealing. Shifting between different eras and social conditions, the author Cira Crespo and the illustrator Elena Ciordia give new life to the lesser-known protagonists of the history of Euskal Herria (Basque Country).

THE AUTHOR: Barcelona-born Cira Crespo lives in Vitoria-Gasteiz (Autonomous Basque Community). She holds a degree in history from the Autonomous University of Barcelona and has devoted herself to the diffusion and popularization of women’s history with works such as ‘Maternalias. De la historia de la maternidad’ (2013) and ‘Madres en red. Del lavadero a la blogosfera’ (2014), collaborating with different media and offering courses and activities in civic centres and at the Jabetze Feministarako Eskola.

Town Hall Square / (in case of rain) Auditorium R. Puppo, Murùs 21.00

A meeting with Angelo Floramo (Friuli) and Andrea Giraudo (Italy).

SYNOPSIS: The lyric poetry of the troubadours in langue d’Óc – poetry and song – is considered to be the first literary production in a Romance language. At the turn of the 12th and 13th centuries, trobadours and trobairitz not only made Occitan the language of reference for European literature, but they also gave new centrality to the role of women and helped spread innovative and, in many ways, revolutionary ideas throughout the continent. The Occitan troubadours were “mentors” to a wide array of European authors, such as Dante Alighieri, who paid homage – through the figure of the Aquitaine poet Arnaut Daniel – in the Divine Comedy (where he exceptionally used Occitan in eight verses of the Purgatory). In this cultural exchange that did not know borders or concepts like “majority” or “minority”, Occitan influence reached and found fertile ground in Friuli, particularly during the Bertrando’s patriarchate.

SPEAKERS: Born in Udine (Friuli), Angelo Floramo teaches history and literature and works as a consultant for the Guarneriana Library of San Daniele del Friuli. He delves into archives, writes as a columnist for both Friulian and Italian magazines and is author of several books, such as Balkan Circus (2013), L’osteria dei passi perduti (2017) and La veglia di Ljuba (2018). Born in Cuneo, Andrea Giraudo holds a degree in literature and PhDs in history, literature and Romance philology from the École Pratique des Hautes Études in Paris and the University of Siena, where he is now a research fellow. He is a member of ‘Association Internationale d’Études Occitanes’ and of ‘Société de Langues et de Littératures Médiévales d’Oc et d’Oïl’. He authored several articles and works on Medieval literature and Waldensian sermons.

The 600-year anniversary of the Fall of the Patriarchal State of Aquilea as a ground of confrontation between this historic event and the Conquest of the Kingdom of Navarre in 1512. The two events do not only offer an opportunity to discover more about akin historical events, but also to think about their consequences on the local communities involved, the way “official” historiography tried to undermine the very nature of these events and to awaken the conscience through the rediscovery of symbols, facts and protagonists that marked that historical period. A journey through history and memory to discuss our present day.
Guests: Joseba Asiron was born in Iruñea/Pamplona (Navarre). A graduate in art history, he is a teacher and author of publications and initiatives dedicated to the resistance and the conquest of Navarre, such as 50 fechas clave de la conquista de Navarra (2013). Politically committed to the Basque independentist left-party, he also served as mayor of Iruñea.

Maybe not everyone knows that Leonardo’s passport to the Court of Milan, where he had his most productive time, were no less than his music skills and a bizarre instrument he invented. Music can also serve as a tool to promote the culture, history and language of a community, far beyond its physical borders. Same goes for the Occitan community: in the Piedmont valleys that are home to this community, music played a central role in the rediscovery and promotion of the Occitan identity. Music – from Patriarchate melodies to Mainerio, up to the Friulian music wave (“gnove musiche furlane”) – similarly played a crucial identity role in Friuli. Occitan musician Sergio Berardo and Friulian scholar Angelo Floramo will guide us through a fascinating journey that spans centuries and borders, and intertwines music and words.

GUESTS: Sergio Berardo is a famous Occitan singer and multi-instrumentalist. He is the voice and soul of Lou Dalfin, the most important band of the Occitan Piedmont Valleys. He’s active in multiple projects of research, promotion and reinvention of the Occitan folk music. One of these projects is is Gran Bal Dub, a mix of folk, reggae and electronic music, with keyboardist Madaski of Africa Unite.

Guillem Agulló i Salvador was assassinated by a group of neo-fascists on 11 April 1993 in Montanejos (Valencian Country). He was an athlete, anti-fascist, and independentist. He was only 18 years old. His murder drew attention on the existing links between extreme right-wing circles and the police, on media manipulation and on the impunity of hate crimes. His story marked a generation and made Guillem Agulló a symbol of freedom. At once with human participation and narrative accuracy, the novel “Guillem”, by Núria Cadenes, tells the story of this committed and combative young man, as well as the story of the Valencian country at that time.

The yellow ribbon has become a symbol that goes beyond the expression of solidarity with Catalan political prisoners and exiles. It represents the indignation and hope that pervade Catalan society. It’s a demand for justice, a demand for fundamental rights and a cry for freedom. With her book Jo també porto el llaç groc, the journalist Maria Xinxó justifies person to person, with 100 hundred stories, the reasons why the ribbon is worn by thousands of Catalans every day.
