Spazio Bottega by Bottega Errante Edizioni, Udine

LANGUAGES: Galician, Italian, Friulian

SYNOPSIS: «Conta, Sherezade» – the latest novel by the renowned Galician writer Suso de Toro, focuses on the role of the narrator and the reconstruction of a family history, which also serves as an investigation into collective memory. Starting from this latest work, our dialogue with Suso de Toro will offer an opportunity to discuss topics such as literature in minority languages (beginning with Galician), political repression and the relationship between history and memory, as well as other highly relevant social issues.

GUEST: Suso de Toro [Xesús Miguel de Toro Santos] (Santiago de Compostela, 1956). With a degree in Modern and Contemporary Art, he has worked as a television screenwriter, contributor to various newspapers, and secondary school teacher. A committed defender of linguistic rights and minority peoples, he has published over thirty books of fiction, non-fiction and theatre in Galician, which have been translated into numerous other languages. His 1993 novel “Tic-tac” is widely regarded as one of the most important works in Galician literature. His latest novel, “Conta, Sherezade”, was published this spring.

INTRODUCED AND MODERATED BY: Pedro Basalo Bembibre (lecturer at the Centro de Estudos Galegos)

EXTRA: The event features a photographic exhibition called “Entroido: il Carnavâl rurâl de Galizie” (Entroido: the rural carnival of Galicia), showcasing images by Galician photographer and filmmaker Roberto de la Torre. For twenty years, he has been portraying the rituals and traditions of his homeland, which are part of an intangible heritage that is at risk of disappearing along with the society that produced it.
