The festival starts in Udine with local singer-songwriter Loris Vescovo performing in Piazza Libertà, whereas Alidé Sans is taking the audience on a journey made of words and music to her native Aran Valley.
UDINE – Here we are! The eighth edition of Suns Europe is about to start: the minority language arts festival organized by Cooperativa Informazione Friulana, publisher of Radio Onde Furlane, with the financial support of Regione Autonoma Friuli Venezia Giulia, ARLeF – Agjenzie Regjonâl pe Lenghe Furlane, Municipaliy of Udine, and Fondazione Friuli, with the collaboration of the Etxepare Basque Institute and of other local and international public and private bodies.
30 JUNE – The festival will start in Udine, on 30 June at 9.00 pm, with a concert by Loris Vescovo branded Suns Friûl (free entry). The singer-songwriter will bring to the stage of Piazza Libertà (in the event of rain: Teatro Palamostre) the songs of his fifth studio album “Adalt”. Like his previous “Penisolati” (Targa Tenco 2014), this work is a refined compendium of colours borrowed from people and communities of different latitudes. Accompanying Loris on this sound journey is a new young band capable of cutting ties with tradition to launch themselves into unexplored places.
01 JULY – The festival, which once again brings music, cinema, theatre and literature to Friuli in the minority languages of the Old Continent, will continue at Visio Garden (Cinema Visionario, via Asquini) on 1 July at 7 p.m., with the talk “È begut de libertat…”: a multilingual meeting with Occitan singer-songwriter Alidé Sans. The event (free admission), organized in collaboration with CEC – Centro Espressioni Cinematografiche, Udine, will be moderated by Marco Stolfo and will take the audience to the discovery of Aran, a Pyrenean valley within the Autonomous Community of Catalonia where the langue d’òc is spoken.
Exceptional ambassador of these places is the young activist and singer-songwriter Alidé Sans, whose songs in Aranese Occitan address universal themes with a strong focus on social issues.
2-3 JULY – Back to music on 2 and 3 July with two acts by the very same Alidé Sans (free entry)! On 2 July at 9.00 pm, Alidé will perform at Cjase di Catine (Villalta di Fagagna), whereas the following day at the same time she will bring her music to Lavariano, in Corte di via Canonica 25 (in the event of rain: “S. Paolino city square music hall). Her ‘libertarian poetry’, combined with the global rhythms of soul, rock and hip hop, is rendered in a straight-forward and engaging acoustic style. Getting to know Alidé is an opportunity to travel to one of the linguistically most interesting places in Europe through the sensitivity of a young and highly empowered artist.
SUNS EUROPE – Suns Europe is the European festival of performing arts in minoritized languages (term for languages that are denied the possibility of being used in a normal and equal manner in all areas of daily life). Started in 2009 in Friuli, the multilingual heart of Europe, Suns (Friulian: sounds) was a music contest for minority communities in Alpine-Mediterranean Europe. The festival subsequently developed into Suns Europe (Friulian: sounds of Europe), a place of encounter and exchange between artists of minoritized language groups in Europe and a chance for all European communities to become aware of their linguistic rights, as well as the importance of cultural pluralism as a heritage, right, and opportunity for all, in Friuli and beyond. The festival is organized by Cooperativa Informazione Friulana, publisher of Radio Onde Furlane, with the financial support of Regione Autonoma Friuli Venezia Giulia, ARLeF – Agjenzie Regjonâl pe Lenghe Furlane, Municipality of Udine, Fondazione Friuli, and with the contribution of the Etxepare Basque Institute, of the associations Amîs da Mont Quarine and Damatrà, and of CEC Centro Espressioni Cinematografiche. It also avails itself of the collaboration of other local and international public and private bodies, such as the Municipalities of Artegna, Mortegliano, Moruzzo, Pozzuolo del Friuli, and Romans d’Isonzo, the association Amici del Teatro of Artegna, the Philharmonic Society of Pozzuolo del Friuli, Liberatorio d’Arte “Fulvio Zonch” of Romans d’Isonzo, Cas*Aupa in Udine, and the cultural associations Inniò, Babel (Sardinia) and Stichting REUR (Lower Saxony). Suns Europe has the merit of transforming Friuli into a crossroad of cultures and artists, by giving the right relevance to artistic productions of absolute quality.
