Sharp tongues ready to cut through any stylistic boundary taking no prisoners. Remei de Ca la Fresca are one of the most difficult bands to pigeonhole within the multi-faceted Indian Runners label. It’s not hip hop, it’s not soul, it’s not art rock, and it’s not even funk or prog… Poetry? Theatre? Whatever it is, this fresh breeze from the remote Catalan mountains of Montseny is charged with irreverent self-mockery and is allergic to any euphemism.

What is an untranslatable phrase, an expression or a word in your language that you love? And why?
“Fresca” literally is the feminine for “fresh”. It is used to describe women who are considered to have many casual sexual relationships or encounters, but it is also used for people who don’t care about anything.
What are 3 adjectives you would use to describe your language? Why did you choose them?
ACCURATE, because it is very detailed and descriptive.
VOCALIC, as it has many phonemes for the vowels.
COSY, because it is the language we talk, and we grew up with, and it feels honest, and it feels like home when we speak it.
Some people think that making music/art in a minoritized language closes many doors – what are instead the doors that it has opened to you?
It should be natural to sing in your current language. Catalan is the language we speak day to day, so it is natural for us to use it to sing, but also it is a political decision. Languages shouldn’t be banned, but they are, because it is a control weapon. So, this political decision we made, of course, it closes many doors for us, but, instead, we arrive to the correct places and people, like here.
If you could make an appeal to anyone to keep their language alive, what would you recommend? What do you see as the biggest challenges or difficulties to maintain your language?
To use it, at all costs, even if you know you’ll be judged or even if you suspect they would not understand you. To use it always, if you are talking or if you are writing, from your artistic work to your everyday life. The only way to keep a language alive is to use it. The biggest challenge is to believe that your language is enough and not less valid than the ones that have been imposed by force.
How would you respond to someone who considers your language old and obsolete?
More old and obsolete is fascism… and look: it rules the world! 🙂
